Subsequent research has enabled the reconstruction of his life through parish registers, census returns and military service records.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"blwy79\" data-start=\"360\" data-end=\"393\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"363\" data-end=\"393\">Early Life in Rural Surrey<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"645\">Charles Grout was born on <strong data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"438\">11 April 1890<\/strong> in the Chertsey registration district of Surrey and baptised on <strong data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"519\">13 July 1890<\/strong> at the parish church of Walton-on-Thames. His father remained employed in agricultural labour, and the household was part of a wider pattern of rural families dependent on seasonal and manual work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1369\">During the following decade, the family moved within Surrey, and by the <strong data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1160\">1901 Census<\/strong> they were living in <strong data-start=\"1181\" data-end=\"1191\">Wisley<\/strong>, another rural parish. Charles grew up alongside several siblings, including Abra, Sarah, and William. These early years were shaped by modest means but stable family structure.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"khpzu0\" data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1413\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"1379\" data-end=\"1413\">A Skilled Trade: Harness Maker<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1599\">By <strong data-start=\"1418\" data-end=\"1426\">1911<\/strong>, at age 21, Charles had moved beyond agricultural labour into a skilled occupation. The census records him as a <strong data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1556\">harness maker<\/strong>, still residing in Wisley with his family.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1601\" data-end=\"1827\">This transition represents a significant step upward in status and skill. Harness making was a respected trade requiring training and precision, closely tied to the continued importance of horse transport in Edwardian Britain.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1829\" data-end=\"2159\">Additional evidence shows that he spent approximately <strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1968\">ten years employed by H. Allen &amp; Co., saddlers of 83 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London<\/strong>, indicating that he likely began this work as a teenager. He served as a <strong data-start=\"2808\" data-end=\"2818\">Driver<\/strong>, a role that involved managing horse-drawn transport, supply wagons, and associated equipment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2915\" data-end=\"3089\">He joined at <strong data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"2940\">Woolwich<\/strong> and later served with <strong data-start=\"2963\" data-end=\"2986\">237 Company, A.S.C.<\/strong> His service reflects the essential but often overlooked logistical backbone of the British war effort.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"83ukam\" data-start=\"3096\" data-end=\"3133\"><span associates.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3840\" data-end=\"3949\">This marriage, like many during wartime, took place under the uncertainty of military service and separation.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1iehy7e\" data-start=\"3956\" data-end=\"3999\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"3959\" data-end=\"3999\">A Son Born\u2014and Immediate Loss (1918)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4001\" data-end=\"4076\">Less than a year after their marriage, Charles and Margaret welcomed a son:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4078\" died on <strong data-start=\"4222\" data-end=\"4243\">28 September 1918<\/strong>, just <strong data-start=\"4250\" data-end=\"4282\">four days after giving birth<\/strong>, from complications
