John Waugh (1771- 1802) of Gloucestershire

My Waugh family were based on the Somerset/Gloucestershire borders during the 1700 – 1900′s.

  • John Waugh Snr my 5x great grand father, (born about 1750.
  • Had a son also called John Waugh, my 4x great grandfather, (1771-1802) (his family tree and data here).
  • John Jnr had a son, Robert Waugh (1798-1883), my 3x great grandfather was a Felt Hat maker.
  • Edwin Waugh (1833-1905), my 2x great grand father was a steam hammer operator in the iron works.
  • Many of my family worked in mines in the Bitton, Keynsham area during the 1800′s. In fact my great grand uncle, Luther Robert Waugh (brother of my great grandfather), died in the mines aged only 14 in 1885. I was truly shocked when I read his tragic story – I have dedicated a page to him here. It includes a news report of his accident and inquest).

Waugh tree detailMy great grandfather, Clement Edwin (born in 1857), moved to Newton Abbot, Devon in about 1878 and settled there as a copper-smith with Great Western Railway until his death in 1914.

Both my grandfather, Albert Edwin (1894-1975) (who also worked with GWR) and my father (born in the 1920’s) were born in the town. Grandpa had two brothers who both sadly died at a very young age in 1898 in the flu epidemic. I remember him telling my how his life was saved by a glass of water. I didn’t quite understand the significance of this until after he died and I began researching the family.

My grandfather told me several times that the Waughs in our family originally came from Dingwall and Ross and Cromarty. To date I have not accurately connected our Scottish Waughs to our branch in Somerset / Gloucestershire. There must have been a point when one of my direct descendents moved south to set up a dynasty in the Westcountry.

How to connect my Somerset/Gloucestershire/Devon Waugh’s to my blood relations in Scotland?
