Note

The above is copied from an old Family Bible at Rodney Street & is now corroborated by the burials in Kirkby Lonsdale Register.

No mention is made of the marriage of Henry Bickersteth & Elizabeth Batty in 1777.
Batty, on the other hand appears to have been a very old family in the neighbourhood of Kirkby Lonsdale.

According to Mrs Mayor, Mr Henry Bickersteth came from Burton in Kendal; it is probable that he only settled in K. Lonsdale shortly before his marriage, as Mr Newby the surgeon of Kirkby died in 1775, & that in this way he met Elizabeth Batty.

Batty family section

Family of Batty appear to have come from Parish of Tunstall
& settled at Biggins & Deansbiggin in Heaswick in the parish of Kirkby Lonsdale about the year 1700.
There seem to have been at least four brothers in this family.

1. William Batty

William Batty of Burrow was married to Agnes Glover of [Maun?]
Apr. 27th 1706.

William Batty from Burrow in Tunstall Parish died & was buried Feby 3rd 1749.

Agnes Batty late of Burrow in Tunstall Parish widow died & was buried Sept. 17th 1756.

William, son of William Batty of Biggins, bapt. Oct. 7th 1730.

Elizabeth Thompson in K. Lonsdale May 2nd 1726.

3. Bryan Batty

Bryan Batty of K. Lonsdale, late of Tunstall Parish died & was
buried April 25th 1758.

4. Edward Batty and Katherine (sic) his wife

Edward Batty of Deansbiggin died & was buried Dec. 16th 1763.

Inscription note

The following inscription also is found on a tombstone in Kirkby Churchyard:

“Near this stone are interred the remains of John Batty late of
Biggins, Gentleman, who died the first day of April 1790 aged 62 years,
also the remains of Elizabeth Batty his wife, who died the 10th day of April 1800 aged 75.”
